Chapter 13

Opening Up

“How are you holding up?” Lukas swam up to me.

“Dude, I honestly don’t know.” There was a reassuring pat on my submerged foot. “I guess that I figured once I got here there would be so much to do it would kinda get my mind off her.”

“It isn’t?”

“For a few minutes here and there. But basically only when I am dealing with some other problem.”

“Well at least you get a few minutes without thinking about her.”

“Yeah but they are stressful times, so basically I get to look forward to either missing her or being stressed. Now that’s a real joyous outlook.”

“What stressful situations have you had already? I thought that everything was going great so far.”

“Well there is the whole Spencer thing. I am still a little nervous that I don’t know him better.” After our talk I had a great deal of trust in him, but there was still a nagging suspicion that I couldn’t get rid of.

“What else?”

“Well Powers is having second thoughts about being a counselor I think.”

“No, really? He’s going to be a great counselor.”

“I know. He’s going to think it over for the next few days.”

“Do you think that it would help if I talked to him?”

“Maybe, I’m not really sure.” I had no idea if any of us could truly understand what Powers must be going through.

“Yeah, I think it would.” Powers said from a few feet behind me.

“Holy shit dude you scared me!” I almost fell off the dock I was so startled.

He couldn’t help but laugh a little, “Sorry Kes.” He sat down beside me and put his feet in the water with mine. We sat in silence for a few minutes.

“So you’re having second thoughts?” Lukas finally broke the silence.

“Yeah.” He swirled the water with his feet.

“How come? Kes and I both think that you’re going to be great.” Lukas treaded water over to Powers and gave him a reassuring pat on the leg.

I could see his lip tremble in the moonlight. A tear glistened on his cheek. He held his composure though. “Kes can you do me a favor?”

“Of course dude, name it.”

“Can you tell Lukas?”

“You want me to tell him?” The prospect made me a little uneasy to say the least.

“Yeah, I want him to know.” Lukas gave me a very confused look from the water.

“Well…” I had no idea how to put it. For a moment I understood how difficult this must be for Powers. “Powers broke rule 19B.”

Lukas seemed to think for a minute. Then asked, “With who?”

I looked at Powers to see if he wanted me to continue. I didn’t have to, he answered himself. “Bard.”

“Oh, well that makes sense now.” There was a moment of silence. “Can I ask you a question?” he treaded water in front of Powers.

“I guess.”

“Did you want to do it or was it his idea?”

“I wanted to.”

“So you’re pretty much into guys?” Lukas’s voice was very gentle but I could still see the tears glistening on Powers cheeks.

“I guess.
